How to calculate a discount percentage

The formula is: Discount % = (1 − Sale Price / Original Price) × 100.

Example: original price $80, sale price $60 → (1 − 60/80) × 100 = (1 − 0.75) × 100 = 25% discount.

FAQ

What % off is $30 from an original price of $50?

(1 − 30/50) × 100 = (1 − 0.60) × 100 = 40% off.

Is this the same as percentage decrease?

Yes. A discount percentage is a percentage decrease from the original price to the sale price. The formula is identical.

Can I use this for non-monetary values?

Yes — any "before" and "after" values work. For example, a subscription that dropped from 500 users to 350 users saw a (1 − 350/500) × 100 = 30% decrease.
