GPA stands for Grade Point Average. Each letter grade corresponds to a numeric value on the 4.0 scale, and each course is weighted by its credit hours. The formula is:
GPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credit Hours
Where Total Grade Points = sum of (grade points × credit hours) for each course.
| Letter | Points | Letter | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ / A | 4.0 | C+ | 2.3 |
| A- | 3.7 | C | 2.0 |
| B+ | 3.3 | C- | 1.7 |
| B | 3.0 | D+ | 1.3 |
| B- | 2.7 | D / D- | 1.0 / 0.7 |
| — | — | F | 0.0 |
Calculus (A, 4 credits) + English (B+, 3 credits) + History (A-, 3 credits):
Total grade points = (4.0×4) + (3.3×3) + (3.7×3) = 16 + 9.9 + 11.1 = 37.0
Total credits = 10 → GPA = 37.0 ÷ 10 = 3.70
A GPA of 3.5 or above is generally considered excellent and puts you on the Dean's List at many institutions. A 3.0 (B average) is considered good and meets the minimum for most graduate school applications. Below 2.0 (C-) is often the threshold for academic probation.
To calculate cumulative GPA, include all courses from all semesters in the same calculator. Each course is weighted by its credit hours, so a 4-credit course has more impact on your average than a 1-credit elective.
At most US institutions, A+ and A are both worth 4.0 grade points. Some schools give A+ a value of 4.3, which can push cumulative GPA above 4.0. This calculator uses 4.0 for both, which matches the majority of institutions.
Generally all graded courses count. Pass/Fail courses, audits, and transfer credits may or may not count depending on your institution's policy. Check with your registrar for your specific situation.
