What are timezones?

A timezone is a region of the Earth that observes a uniform standard time. Timezones are defined as offsets from UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) — the primary time standard that all clocks worldwide are synchronized to. For example, UTC+1 means one hour ahead of UTC, and UTC-5 means five hours behind.

There are 38 distinct UTC offsets in use today, ranging from UTC−12:00 (Baker Island) to UTC+14:00 (Line Islands). Most offsets are whole hours, but some countries use half-hour (India: UTC+5:30, Iran: UTC+3:30) or even 45-minute offsets (Nepal: UTC+5:45).

Daylight Saving Time (DST)

Many countries advance their clocks by one hour during summer to extend evening daylight — this is called Daylight Saving Time (DST). The practice means that the time difference between two cities can change by ±1 hour depending on the time of year. Not all countries observe DST: most of Africa, Asia, and South America do not. In the US, DST runs from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between UTC and GMT?

UTC and GMT are often used interchangeably, and for most practical purposes they show the same time. The technical difference is that GMT is a timezone (based on mean solar time at the Greenwich meridian) while UTC is a time standard (based on atomic clocks). Modern systems use UTC as the reference.

How do I schedule a meeting across timezones?

Use the Time Converter above: enter your preferred meeting time, select your timezone as "From", and check the converted times in all your added clocks. A common overlap for US + Europe is 14:00–17:00 UTC, which covers morning in New York and afternoon in London/Madrid.

Why does India use UTC+5:30?

India uses a single timezone (IST, UTC+5:30) for the entire country. The half-hour offset is a historical choice made at independence, roughly splitting the difference between the eastern and western extremes of the country. Nepal (UTC+5:45) went even further to avoid sharing a timezone with India.

Does Japan observe Daylight Saving Time?

No. Japan, China, South Korea, India, and most of Africa and Asia do not observe DST. This means the time difference between these countries and DST-observing regions like the US and Europe changes by one hour in spring and autumn.
